(Video) Cole Palmer picks ex-Liverpool player Jurgen Klopp got rid of to shoot life-saving penalty

Cole Palmer picked former Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli when asked to named one player to take a penalty to save his life.

Of all the players in world football – never mind the many Reds to have donned the famous shirt – we have to admit some surprise at hearing the Chelsea star’s answer.

VOTE for Empire of the Kop in Best Club Content Creator – Premier League HERE

The Italian international was, without question, a highly talented footballer. However, his unsavoury antics on and off the pitch, coupled with an apparent lack of work ethic, evidently didn’t wash with former manager Jurgen Klopp.

In fact, the German tactician reportedly (Tribuna) asked Balotelli to leave in search of a loan spell to better himself before returning to Merseyside.

The former Manchester City forward eventually left in the summer of 2016, signing for Nice on a free transfer.

At the very least, we can’t accuse Cole Palmer of opting for a safe answer!

Jamie Carragher raves about Liverpool wizard who looked like an ‘£80m player’ v West Ham

Jamie Carragher was swooning over one Liverpool player who caught his eye during the Carabao Cup win over West Ham tonight.

The match at Anfield saw Federico Chiesa make his first start for the Reds after his £12.5m transfer from Juventus a month ago, and the Italian impressed with some slick touches before he was substituted in the 59th minute.

Speaking on co-commentary for Sky Sports shortly before half-time, the former LFC defender gushed: “Chiesa was an £80m player a few years ago. He showed a glimpse there.”

READ MORE: ‘Honestly…’ – Jamie Carragher fumes at Liverpool player over ‘clumsy’ first-half moment

That quote from Carragher was in response to a brilliant moment of ingenuity from Chiesa as he casually nutmegged Vladimir Coufal in the West Ham penalty area.

That came a few minutes after a volleyed assist for Diogo Jota’s first-half equaliser, with the 26-year-old quickly endearing himself to the Liverpool faithful in just his third appearance for the club.

As per Sofascore, the Italy forward misplaced just two passes during his hour on the pitch, won two duels, played two key passes, created one ‘big chance’ and delivered one accurate cross.

That all ensured Chiesa a ‘standing ovation’ as he left the field of play, as noted by Nick Wright for Sky Sports, and while he didn’t have a goal to cap his first Reds start, he showed more than enough to suggest that the fee LFC paid for him will look like absolute chickenfeed in today’s market.

Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out on Liverpool future amid contract uncertainty

Trent Alexander-Arnold is in the last year of his contract at Anfield (Picture: Getty Images)

Trent Alexander-Arnold is keeping his cards close to his chest on the topic of his Liverpool future, although has revealed that any decision will be based on the likelihood of winning silverware.

The 25-year-old is into the final year of his contract with the Reds and could leave for free at the end of the season, which would be a huge blow for the club.

The England international came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and has only ever played for one club, his transfer value would also be extremely high, so to lose an iconic fan favourite for nothing would be something of a disaster.

Alexander-Arnold is not ruling it out, though, with Real Madrid linked with an interest in signing him next year, although there would be no shortage of other suitors for his signature.

‘I want to be a Liverpool player this season [as a minimum] is what I will say,’ Alexander-Arnold said on his plans. ‘I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public and this one won’t be either.’

On his motivations, he explained: ‘The most important thing is always trophies if I am honest. I want to win trophies, I am a player who is highly motivated by trophies and winning things and being elite.

‘So that is probably the main factor of anything, if you have a personality that is elite, who wants to win and will do anything to win then that is what drives me.’

Trent Alexander-Arnold has won a string of trophies at Liverpool (Picture: Getty Images)

The versatile full-back hinted that his thirst for silverware could be quenched at Anfield, having lifted a number of trophies in his time with the club already.

Alexander-Arnold has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Reds, so there has been no shortage of trophies over his career so far.

‘We were close to the title last season and we got a cup,’ he said. ‘The quadruple was on for a while I suppose, the signs were there.

‘This season we are looking really good, it is still early days, but we need a lot of consistency and beat a lot of teams over the course of this season. Then you have the other cups, the Champions League and everything that comes around it. It will be difficult but we are looking to win as many trophies as we can.’

Alexander-Arnold has spoken about how much he is enjoying working with new manager Arne Slot, saying the Dutchman is already helping him improve his game.

Alexander-Arnold says he is enjoying working with Slot (Picture: Getty Images)

‘We kind of talked about targets and aims and I said to him that I would like to be the defender that no-one wants to come up against in Europe,’ said the full-back.

‘We agreed that he will be harsh on me. If any time an attacker gets by me and gets past me he will call it out in meetings and individual meetings and say this cannot happen.

‘We go through every game together and he highlights where he wants me to improve. Even in the Milan game (which Liverpool won 3-1 on Tuesday) we had about 20 clips going through what I could have done better and the good parts as well.

‘It is really refreshing to have a manager who will help and guide and teach me how to be better as a player. I am someone who wants to learn, someone who wants to be the best and someone who strives to be the best ever.’

Manchester United and Liverpool both keen on Fulham defender

Antonee Robinson has impressed for Fulham since joining in 2020 (Picture: Getty Images)

Manchester United and Liverpool are both considering moves for Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson, according to reports.

The 27-year-old has been a fixture in the Cottagers’ first-team since joining from Wigan in 2020, making 155 appearances for the club and scoring three goals.

Born and raised in England, Robinson’s father has American citizenship and the full-back opted to play for USA, winning 46 caps so far.

His performances for club and country have attracted attention from Premier League giants, with Liverpool and Manchester United both interested in his signature, reports The Sun.

Left-back has been an issue for the Red Devils with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia struggling badly with injuries.

Neither man has featured yet this season with summer signing Noussair Mazraoui filling in on the left of defence and even veteran Jonny Evans slotting in there at times.

Shaw remains first choice, but has not played a club match since February and his reliability, in terms of fitness, is certainly in question.

Malacia has not played for Manchester United since May 2023 in a Premier League win over Fulham, with a serious knee problem keeping him out of action for well over a year.

Arne Slot and Erik ten Hag would both welcome a new left-back (Picture: Getty Images)

Liverpool still have Andy Robertson as first choice left-back, with the 30-year-old starting all five of their Premier League games so far this season.

Kostas Tsimikas remains the back-up for the Scot so there would be plenty of competition for Robinson if he were to make the move to Anfield.

Robinson grew up on Merseyside, coming through the youth set-up at Everton before moving on a permanent transfer to Wigan in 2019.

The in-demand left-back was in the starting XI as Fulham beat Newcastle 3-1 at Craven Cottage on Saturday, climbing to eighth in the Premier League table as a result.

Arne Slot reveals plan for Martin Zubimendi after failed Liverpool transfer

Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Liverpool in the summer (Quality Sport Images/Getty)

Arne Slot believes the arrival of Martin Zubimendi would not have impacted Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive start to the season for Liverpool.

Liverpool made Zubimendi their top midfield target in the summer transfer window but the Spain international rejected a move to Anfield and ended up staying at Real Sociedad.

Despite failing to land Zubimendi, Liverpool’s midfield have instantly clicked under Slot with Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai performing well as a trio.

Slot feels Zubimendi would have been a strong addition to his midfield but insists Liverpool have now ‘moved on’.

‘If you’ve noticed it is not that much of one holding midfielder, it is a bit more two,’ said Slot.

‘And one of those two can be a bit more attacking and I think the player you mentioned [Zubimendi] could have fitted in one of those two roles and Ryan can fit in both roles like Curtis [Jones] can, [Alexis] Mac Allister can and Wataru [Endo] can.

Ryan Gravenberch has made an impressive start to the season with Liverpool (UEFA via Getty)

‘There is no point talking about Zubimendi anymore because he stayed with Real Sociedad and we’ve moved on and we are really happy with Ryan.

‘You see a Ryan who is full of confidence and that comes normally with good performances and trusting your team-mates and knowing that you can do what you have to at that level.’

Slot also insists Gravenberch always had the potential to improve following his subdued first season at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

‘I wouldn’t say I am surprised because he’s Dutch, I’m Dutch, so I saw him playing at Ajax when he came up into the first team,’ said Slot.

‘Everybody saw back then what a special talent he was and probably for that reason he went to two amazing clubs, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

‘You can only go to these clubs if they see you have a lot of quality. Then it is up to us to make sure we get the best out of him and that is not only down to what we, as a training staff, do but also he is the most important for that.’

Mohamed Salah’s agent hits out at new Liverpool contract rumours

Mohamed Salah is reportedly ‘desperate’ to stay at Liverpool (Getty)

Mohamed Salah’s agent has appeared to hit back at claims that the Liverpool forward is pushing to sign a new contract.

The 32-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and following Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this month, the Egypt international revealed that the club had not opened talks over an extension.

Last week, reports claimed that Salah is ‘desperate’ to sign a new deal with Liverpool and his main aim is to remain at Anfield.

However, Salah’s representative, Ramy Abbas Issa, has suggested that reports citing information from sources close to the Liverpool forward are wide of the mark.

‘FYI – all those ‘journalists’ who imply having ‘inside information’ about Mohamed’s future are making claims/posts based on absolutely nothing,’ the agent wrote on X.

Mohamed Salah has said this is his final season at Liverpool (Getty)

‘Just click-whoring. “Sources close to Mohamed” don’t exist. This post is really just to tell you that they don’t know.’

Speaking after Liverpool’s win over United before the international break, Salah indicated that this would be his final season at Anfield.

‘I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year,’ Salah said.

‘I was coming to the game today thinking it could be the last time. Nobody at the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract so I just play this last season and then see at the end of the season.

‘It’s not up to me but nobody talk to me about a contract with the club. We’ll see.’

Liverpool among Premier League trio in race for new England star Angel Gomes

Angel Gomes was a surprise call-up to the England squad this month (Picture: Getty Images)

Angel Gomes caught the eye on his first start for England on Tuesday night and there is already a string of clubs ready to battle it out for his signature next summer.

The 24-year-old is a Manchester United academy graduate but after leaving Old Trafford it has been his performances for Lille that earned him a place in the England squad.

Interim manager Lee Carsley gave him his debut as a substitute against Republic of Ireland and then his first start in the 2-0 win over Finland at Wembley.

The midfielder impressed in the middle of the park and there is little surprise that clubs are circling given his contract status.

Gomes is out of contract at the end of the season, with the deal he signed at Lille in 2020 expiring in 2025 and little suggestion that he plans to renew.

Now an England international and available on a free transfer, clubs are expected to be flocking for his signature.

The Sun reports that Newcastle have already made Gomes their number one target, while Liverpool, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund all fancy a move for the former Manchester United man.

The report states that Newcastle are even considering making a bid in January in order to beat the competition to the signing.

Gomes impressed as he started in the win over Finland (Picture: Getty Images)

Carsley handed Gomes his first senior caps after managing him for England Under-21s and being thoroughly impressed by his footballing knowledge and tactical insight.

‘He loves football, he watches football, he’s interested in tactics,’ Carsley said of Gomes. ‘He knows all the players in any league.

‘If you ask him for any feedback, you need to be prepared that he’s going to give you some feedback on the session, or how we’re going to build up, or the positions.

‘He’ll often say about some build-ups he’s done with other clubs, or what he’s played against, because he’s obviously playing in France, so he sees different things.’

Liverpool star reveals desire to leave Anfield after £29m Arne Slot signing

Caoimhin Kelleher is keen to leave Liverpool (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has aired his frustrations at the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili and said he now wants to leave Anfield in search of regular minutes.

Kelleher has been the long-term back-up to Allison throughout his time at the club but has often held a desire to become a first-choice keeper.

However, the 25-year-old’s hopes of succeeding the Brazilian were dented severely when new manager Arne Slot sanctioned the signing of Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for £30million last month.

The Georgian will spend another year in Spain before arriving at Liverpool and Kelleher is frank that it could spell the end of his time at the club.

‘I’ve made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out,’ the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper said.

‘The club’s made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they’ve made a decision to go in a different direction.’

Liverpool rejected a bid from Nottingham Forest to sign Kelleher over the summer, with the Irishman hinting the decision to stay was not down to him.

Kelleher saw a move to Nottingham Forest rejected by Liverpool this summer (Picture: Getty)

‘It’s been reported that Liverpool have rejected a few bids as well. My ambition is clear that I think I’m good enough and I want to go out and prove it,’ he added.

‘Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like that’s 100% my decision but at times it’s not always in my hands.’

After Mamardashvili, the Reds made just one further signing this summer, with Juventus winger Federico Chiesa joining for just €13m (£10.9m).

Asked what the Italian may bring to his side, Slot said: ‘He brings experience and talent, but at the same time he brings the potential to keep on getting better and this is something that really excites us.

‘I have said all summer that it is not easy to sign players for Liverpool because the standard of players we have is so high but in Federico I firmly believe we are signing someone who enhances what is already here.

‘It’s not just his talents physically; Federico has experience of winning trophies, of course one with his national team, and dealing with setbacks and challenges. It’s the mentality we want here at Liverpool.

‘Not only this, but he is someone who has an incredible work-rate to match his talent.’

Victor Osimhen includes Arsenal and Chelsea transfer demand in deal with Galatasaray

Victor Osimhen is set to join Galatasaray on loan for the rest of the season (Anadolu via Getty)

Victor Osimhen has demanded a break clause as part of his deal with Galatasaray which would allow him to join Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool in the January transfer window, according to reports in Turkey.

Chelsea stepped up talks with Napoli and Osimhen in the closing stages of the summer transfer window last week but were unable to reach an agreement to sign the Nigeria international before Friday’s deadline.

Osimhen has now opted to join Galatasaray on loan for the remainder of the season with the Turkish champions agreeing to pay the Napoli striker’s salary, worth around €210,000 (£176,000) a week, in full in return for no loan fee.

The 25-year-old was greeted by Galatasaray supporters after arriving in Istanbul in the early hours of Tuesday morning in order to complete his medical and finalise his transfer.

Osimhen had been holding out for a move to the Premier League having turned down the chance to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, whose €80 million (£67.3m) offer was accepted by Napoli last month.

And according to reports in Turkey, Osimhen has still left the door open for a potential switch to a Premier League club in the January transfer window.

A Spor reports that Osimhen demanded during his negotiations with Galatasaray that his loan deal could be terminated in January if Napoli receive a bid from one of 10 specified clubs.

Turkish reporter Kagan Dursun adds that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are among the teams on Osimhen’s list.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Osimhen’s release clause with Napoli has been lowered to €75m (£63.2m), while the Serie A club have the option to extend the striker’s contract until 2027 if he is not sold next summer.

As part of their agreement with Napoli, Galatasaray do not have the option to buy Osimhen at the end of the season.

Antonio Conte made it clear that Victor Osimhen had no future at Napoli (Getty)

Osimhen had been pushing to leave Napoli since the start of the summer and had been left out of every pre-season fixture by head coach Antonio Conte.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 win over Parma on Saturday, Conte made it clear that he had no plans to reintegrate Osimhen if he had stayed at Napoli.

‘No, this is the team. This is the group,’ Conte said.

‘We made decisions. I mentioned coherence before. Those who are not consistent don’t respect the rules. I repeat, respect to the club. The president proved consistent despite losing important money, credit where credit is due.

‘The club were consistent, knowing that if the situation had unlocked earlier, we would all have been advantaged. As I said, we’ve started rebuilding. Good players arrived. They were on the table. It took us time to understand and think about it, but we signed them, and I am happy.

‘We didn’t do everything and it’s okay but I think the club did well.’

Liverpool hero in talks for Premier League return just months after leaving Anfield

Joel Matip left Liverpool over the summer (Photo: Getty)

West Ham are reportedly in talks to sign Joel Matip who is still a free agent after leaving Liverpool last season.

Matip departed Anfield upon the expiry of his contract in July after eight successful years at Liverpool where he made 201 appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

The Cameroonian’s trophy haul included the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

But his final season with the club would end early thanks to a cruciate ligament injury which has meant he hasn’t played since last December.

Now ready to return to action he may well have found his new club, with Sky Sports reporting that West Ham are exploring the free agent market for a new centre-back.

The Irons have their eye on Matip and former Sheffield United star John Egan and talks have been held with the two players’ agents.

Julen Lopetegui has had a busy first summer at the London Stadium and has already overhauled his side’s defence, signing highly-rated centre-back duo Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo.

But the Spanish manager is concerned about the depth at the back especially following the sale of former captain Kurt Zouma and the loan exit of Nayef Aguerd.

Should Matip join the East London club in the next few days he could well make an appearance against his former side with West Ham set to travel to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third-round on September 17.

Before that West Ham face Fulham in the Premier League on September 14 having won just one of their first three league games under new boss Lopetegui.

Liverpool to rival Manchester City for Crystal Palace star after missing out on Martin Zubimendi

Adam Wharton only joined Crystal Palace in January (Photo: Getty)

Manchester City and Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Adam Wharton following his breakout season with Crystal Palace.

The transfer window may be closed but clubs are already looking at potential signings for next summer.

City may well be very busy then amid reports they could lose star player Rodri who may be tempted to join Real Madrid.

The Spaniard is the best defensive midfielder in the world and a frontrunner for this year’s Ballon d’Or so would leave a big void in the team, but even if he stays put the Citizens are keen to bolster their already impressive midfield options.

To that end, the Daily Mail report that City are keeping tabs on Wharton who only joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January for £22million and has a contract until 2029.

The 20-year-old’s meteoric rise from the Championship to the Premier League to England’s Euro 2024 squad has been very, very impressive and he’s set to be a key player for Oliver Glasner as Palace attempt to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.

Wharton’s defensive and technical prowess would seemingly make him a good fit to replace the imperious Rodri, but City aren’t the only Premier League giant interested in his services.

Liverpool remain in the market for a new defensive midfielder after missing out on the £51m transfer of Martin Zubimendi.

The Spaniard looked set to become Arne Slot’s first signing for the Reds but the Euros winner changed his mind at the last minute to stay at Real Sociedad.

Liverpool had other names on the shortlist but opted against making a signing, with Ryan Gravenberch impressing as Slot’s deepest lying midfielder in the opening games of the season.

As well as Wharton, the Reds are also said to be eyeing up Palace defender Marc Guehi who remained at Selhurst Park despite strong interest from Newcastle.

City were previously linked with signing Eagles attacker Eberechi Eze but didn’t act on their interest, with both he and Guehi now hoping to impress new England boss Lee Carsley in this week’s Nations League fixtures.

Wharton meanwhile pulled out of the Three Lions’ U21 side to nurse a groin injury but he is expected to be fit in time for Palace’s next game against Leicester on September 14.

Graeme Souness claims Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has ‘made up his mind’ about Real Madrid move

Graeme Souness discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold (Picture: YouTube)

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness claims Trent Alexander-Arnold may have already ‘made up his mind’ over a summer move to Real Madrid and said new manager Arne Slot is already dropping hints.

Alexander-Arnold has been an ever-present cog in Liverpool’s machien in recent years but faces an uncertain future at the club.

The full-back, who came through the Reds’ academy, has just 12 months left on his current contract, a position Mohamaed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also find themselves in.

Alexander-Arnold has been withdrawn early in each of Liverpool’s first three games by new boss Slot and Souness believes it;s a sign that the 25-year-old is looking to move on.

‘Trent Alexander-Arnold is tailor-made for Real Madrid in terms of the way he plays, and he’s got an unbelievable delivery – not to mention he’s good friends with Jude Bellingham,’ he said, speaking on William Hill’s Three Up Front podcast.

‘He could end up at Madrid and that message may already have been relayed to Liverpool. I don’t see any obvious reason to take Trent off against Manchester United, other than if they know he’s leaving.

‘They’d still want to keep him on side for the rest of the season and he’ll go for free at the end of it.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot and Alexander-Arnold (Picture: Getty)

‘The message that he’s made up his mind may already have been relayed to the higher-ups at the club. He’s running his contract down.

‘If you’re going to leave Liverpool, where else other than Real Madrid can you really go to better yourself?’

While Alexander-Arnold has not spoken publcially about his contract situation, Slot has previously explained the decision to bring off the right-back in the early part of the season.

‘Trent came back from the national team where in the beginning of the tournament he played quite a lot then he didn’t, had a few weeks off, came back – this was only his third game,’ the Duthcman said after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Brentford.

‘We have to take care of him because we need him for the whole season and not only for the first two games. The good thing for me is I have a very good back-up with Conor. That means we are taking care of Trent but he played a good game.’

John Terry makes bold prediction for Chelsea starlet who has joined Liverpool

John Terry fears Chelsea have made a costly error by allowing youngster Rio Ngumoha to slip through their grasp and join Premier League rivals Liverpool.

The 15-year-old made the decision to leave his boyhood club at the end of last season and his move to Anfield has now been officially confirmed.

Already an England youth international, Ngumoha has signed a scholar’s contract and will go straight into Liverpool’s Under-18 squad.

Terry congratulated Ngumoha upon with a message on social media once his move to the Merseyside giants had been rubberstamped and went a step further replying to a post on Instagram predicting that the gifted teenager will be a ‘top player’.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C_gXNMUOpUW/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== />

Ngumoha reportedly even trained with the Blues’ first team at points last season and has two goals and two assists in his nine games for England Under-16s.

Despite being at Chelsea throughout the age groups, the teenager is said to have been keen on the move due to Liverpool’s track record of providing a clear pathway into the first team for younger talents.

It has been another summer of upheaval at Chelsea, both on and off the pitch, and another significant change was confirmed on Thursday when it was announced that chief executive Chris Jurasek had left the club to be replaced by Jason Gannon.

Jurasek will return to Clearlake Capital, the co-controlling owners of Chelsea, after just over a year in the role at the club.

‘I am incredibly proud to have led this historic football club into its next chapter,’ Jurasek said.

‘We have accomplished the task of building a team both on and off the pitch that means the club is well-positioned for long-term success.’

During his time at the helm, Jurasek made several decisions that were met with disapproval by Chelsea’s match-going supporters, including referring to them as customers rather than fans.

He also ended a long-standing bus subsidy for away fans and implemented the first general admission season ticket price increases in over a decade.

Micah Richards names ‘electric’ Liverpool star as the best Premier League summer signing

Federico Chiesa signed for Liverpool for £12.5m (Photo: Getty)

Liverpool’s £12.5million signing of Federico Chiesa will prove to be the ‘signing of the transfer window’, Micah Richards believes.

Arne Slot had a quiet first summer at Anfield, only signing two new players: goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili who was immediately loaned back to Valencia and Chiesa.

The versatile attacker arrives from Juventus in a deal worth £10m, plus £2.5m in add-ons, with a great reputation, having scored 34 goals and made 26 assists for the Italian giants over the last four years.

He was also pivotal for Italy in their Euro 2020 triumph and was once valued at £100m.

But given some of his struggles at Juventus as well as his concerning injury record, there has been some debate over whether Liverpool have pulled of a coup or not, but Richards is firmly in the former camp.

‘Not only can he play on the left wing, he can play on the right wing, you could play him in a wing back system, you could play him at right back if need be. He’s so versatile and he’s got electric pace,’ the Manchester City icon said on The Rest is Football podcast.

‘Having watched Serie A, I think at times the game was a little bit closed. I think in the Premier League because the game is stretched, he’ll have more space.

Chiesa struggled to fit in at Juventus (Photo: Getty)

‘We’re judging him recently off international football and playing in Serie A where defenders love to defend and it’s all about the tactics. Over here it’s more about the passion and the speed and the power. I think it suits [him].

‘He didn’t have a bad season last year, he still got nine goals in the league. Why I think it’s such a great buy is the money they paid for him which is £12.5million.

‘I think he’s going to be the signing of the transfer window in terms of… you’re not spending £50million for him. Two or three seasons ago he was worth £100million.’

Alan Shearer agrees that Chiesa’s bargain transfer fee makes it a very good deal for Slot, even if the 26-year-old fails to deliver.

‘I think it’s a no brainer for the fee. It’s a punt, it’s a gamble but it’s one that’s without a doubt worth taking,’ the Premier League legend added.

‘If it works, great and it looks amazing business. If it doesn’t, then it’s £12million. In the grand scheme of things for clubs nowadays that’s nothing.

‘It’s a great punt from Liverpool. If they can get him fit, if they can get him right then they’ve got a very, very good player.’

Chiesa could make his Liverpool debut after the international break, with the Reds taking on Nottingham Forest on September 14.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz sends message to Mohamed Salah after shock transfer revelation

Luis Diaz hopes Mohamed Salah commits his long-term future to Liverpool (Picture: Getty)

Luis Diaz has encouraged Mohamed Salah to stay at Liverpool beyond the end of the season, admitting it would be ‘very hard’ for the club should the forward decide to move on.

Salah has cemented his status as an all-time Liverpool great since swapping Roma for Anfield back in 2017, with the Egyptian playing an instrumental role across Jurgen Klopp’s trophy-laden tenure on Merseyside.

But Salah has entered into the final 12 months of his contract at Liverpool and the attacker appeared to confirmed that it would be his ‘last year’ with the Reds following the side’s 3-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday.

Salah has been targeted for a move to the Saudi Pro League for some time and Al-Ittihad had an eye-watering £150million offer rejected for the 33-year-old last September.

Arne Slot went on to play down the significance of Salah’s surprise statement at Old Trafford and insisted he would be ‘happy’ for the 2019/20 Premier League winner to remain a part of the squad going forward.

Diaz, who benefitted from two Salah assists at the Theatre of Dreams, has echoed Slot’s comments, telling Telemundo he hopes to continue playing with the Egypt international for the foreseeable future.

‘It would be hard for us, the players, as well as for Liverpool,’ Diaz said.

‘It will hurt a lot, he has a year to think about it. It is not easy at all.

‘He always talks to us, it would be very hard to lose a player as key as he is.

‘It is my team-mate’s decision and it is respected, hopefully he doesn’t leave.’

Salah is third on Liverpool’s all-time top scorers list with 214 goals (Picture: Getty)

Reacting to Salah’s comments at the weekend, Alan Shearer said he was ‘really surprised’ that Liverpool had managed to get themselves in such a poor negotiating position.

‘I think it was a good move on Mo Salah’s part after playing such an important role in that win against Man United to come out and say he was treating it like his last season at the club,’ the legendary ex-England and Newcastle striker told Betfair.

‘A couple of assists, a really good goal, a player-of-the-match performance, and then being interviewed afterward to say that no one has come to him or his agent about a contract, which I am amazed about.

‘The situation with him, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk, I’m really surprised they’ve allowed three big hitters to get to this stage.’

Shearer is ‘surprised’ Liverpool have allowed Salah’s contract to run down (Picture: Getty)

Shearer added: ‘Mo was putting a message out there, there’s no doubt about that and whether they listen, whether they’re prepared to give him the length of contract he wants, or the money he wants, we’ll see. There are so many different factors.

‘He may want a big payday and go abroad; we know there was talk about him a few months back about him going to Saudi. Whether that’s what he wants or not I don’t know, but it was clever timing on his part to put that message out.

‘The thing with Salah is, he’s had a rest in the summer and come back in better than ever. He’s started the season incredibly well and when you look at his physique, there’s no doubt he can play at the top level for another two or three years at least.

‘I understand from his point of view that he’ll want a longer contract as he’ll feel he’s better than a one-year deal, but I guess it’s “watch this space”.

‘There’s no doubt the talent, energy and ability are still there and will be for a while, but I just find it really surprising that Salah, Trent and Van Dijk have been allowed to get into the last year of their contracts; particularly Trent being homegrown.

‘I find it really surprising the football club have got themselves into this position.’
