Alisson Becker’s Liverpool Future Remains Uncertain as Contract Talks Have Yet to Begin
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s future at Anfield has become a subject of discussion, with the Brazilian entering the final year of his current contract.
According to The Athletic journalist James Pearce, Liverpool and Alisson have not yet opened talks over a new contract, with the situation currently understood to be considered “too soon” for negotiations to begin.
Alisson’s existing agreement is due to expire in 2027, meaning Liverpool will eventually have an important decision to make regarding the future of one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Alisson’s current importance to Liverpool
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, Alisson remains Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper and has started the 2026/27 campaign strongly.
The 33-year-old produced another important performance in Liverpool’s 1–0 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday, making a crucial save to deny Evanilson during the first half.
Following the victory, the Brazilian highlighted the importance of the Reds being able to win even when their performance was not at its best. He also pointed to the team's recent defensive improvement, with Liverpool recording three consecutive Premier League clean sheets.
His latest performances will only add to the wider discussion surrounding whether Liverpool should look to extend his stay beyond 2027.
No immediate concern over contract talks
There is currently no indication that Liverpool or Alisson are in an immediate dispute over future decisions.
Pearce’s report suggests that both sides simply believe it is too early to begin formal negotiations.
“Is he going to still be around next season? We don’t know that at the moment.
“From what I’ve been told, it’s just too soon on all sides. There’s not been those talks yet.
“If Alisson does stay, Mamardashvili isn’t going to tolerate being backup for a third successive season.
“So if Alisson stays, that probably means that Mamardashvili goes, and then they’ve invested a lot of money in this young Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans.
“Then you’ve got [Vitezslav] Jaros, he’ll be back in a few months, they’ve got Armin Pecsi who’s out on loan in Austria at the moment.
“I get the feeling that they’re quite happy with what they’ve got further down the line in terms of five, six, seven years’ time, but the immediate future is really uncertain."
Goalkeeping options could influence the decision
Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation could also become an important factor in any future decision.
The club signed 18-year-old Lucca Brughmans from Genk in September, with the goalkeeper returning to Belgium on loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 season. Liverpool described the deal as a long-term move.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is also part of the current first-team squad, while Vitezslav Jaroš and other young goalkeepers remain part of Liverpool’s wider goalkeeping structure.
Consequently, any decision regarding Alisson’s future will need to take into account both his continued importance to the first team and Liverpool’s long-term planning for the position.

For now, there is no agreement to report and no confirmation that Alisson is heading for the exit.
What is clear is that his current contract runs until 2027 and talks over an extension have yet to begin, according to Pearce.
