Gini Wijnaldum's Liverpool contract expires in the summer and manager Jurgen Klopp has made an honest admission over the midfielder's future
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he hopes Gini Wijnaldum will sign a new contract and stay at the club past the current season.
The midfielder's current deal expires in the summer and as it enters the final few months, the player will be free to discuss teams with other clubs from January.
Barcelona have already been linked with the Dutchman, who scored a wonderful goal in the Reds' 4-0 win over Wolves on Sunday evening , as Ronald Koeman is reportedly keen to convince the player he has coached while in charge of the national team to move to the La Liga giants.
Wijnaldum's overall performance was exceptional and he has been a crucial part of Klopp's side, being one of just two players who have featured in every one of the champions' Premier League fixtures so far this season.
Asked by Amazon Prime following the game about the situation, Klopp hesitated at first but then admitted his hopes that the matter will be resolved soon.
Responding to a question on if Wijnaldum will sign a new deal Klopp said: "I hope so, to be honest. You can see that, he plays all the time. We have a pretty good relationship. I hope so."
The man himself, who made the move to Anfield from Newcastle United in 2016, remained coy when asked similar questions.
He said: "I already said in my previous interview, I don’t talk about my contract situation, I talk about the game,” he told Amazon Prime.
"The club talk about my contract.
"There's a connection, there was a connection from the first moment I came here, the supporters supported me a lot, but it’s not for me to talk about."
2,000 fans were back at Anfield to see Wijnaldum's impressive performance as he scored a beauty just short of the hour mark to put the home side 2-0 up.
That came after Mohamed Salah sent Liverpool 1-0 in at half-time, with Joel Matip and a Nelson Semedo own goal completing the rout.
"I don't wanna say champions performance, because we did our job, we have to do this every week," Wijnaldum said.
"It was a good game, the position play was good and we scored good goals."
He added: “When we heard that supporters were allowed to the game, we were very happy with that and when we came outside to warm up, they were here and cheering for us. It was a really, really great feeling and of course to win the game 4-0.
"They help to improve the performance a lot because they’re cheering for you and supporting you in the game. Before, we had to do it with only the bench, but everyone knows Anfield, the supporters are vital."
