Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle United in battle to sign £40m-rated Goncalo Inacio from Sporting

The 21-year-old, regarded as one of the most promising young centre-halves in European football, has a release clause of €45million (£40m) and while Sporting are eager to tie him down to a new contract, a summer move is on the cards, according to AS. Three Premier League clubs are thought to be at the top of the queue for his services with Liverpool eager to follow up on initial interest shown last summer. The report suggests he is viewed as an ideal defensive partner for Virgil van Dijk at the back. Arsenal are also credited with serious interest. The Gunners are close to signing Jurrien Timber from Ajax but Mikel Arteta is reportedly planning to use the Dutchman as an inverted right-back, rather than at centre-half where he has shone for Ajax. With William Saliba’s absence causing problems at the back during last season’s run-in, another option at centre-half could be on option being considered at the Emirates. The Magpies are keen to bring in another option at the back ahead of their return to the Champions League with Inacio on their list of options. Any club wishing to price Inacio from Sporting will have to pay his entire release clause up front.
