Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher admits the Reds have paid a ‘big price’ for Moises Caicedo, but hails the ‘great business’ the club has done in the transfer market this summer.
In a shock move on Thursday night Liverpool agreed an enormous £110m deal with Brighton to sign Caicedo, beating Chelsea to the midfielder who they have pursued all summer.
Jurgen Klopp was in desperate need of a holding midfielder after the departure of Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, which Carragher feels put Liverpool in a weak negotiating position.
However, he feels that signing the pair of Alexis Mac Allister and Caicedo from Brighton for a combined £145m, while selling Fabinho and Jordan Henderson for £52m works out as excellent business.
‘£110m is a big price for #Caicedo but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate,’ Carragher tweeted.
‘But signing two top young players for £145m and selling two of your older players for 52M is great business!’
Carragher had called for a deal to be done for Caicedo earlier this week when Liverpool saw a third bid rejected for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
The Belgian teenager looked like the most likely player to fill the void by Fabinho but the Reds did not meet Southampton’s valuation of £50m, instead they splashed out more than double that on the Ecuadorian.
Tweeting on Monday after Liverpool’s third Lavia bid was turned down, Carragher wrote: ‘This is embarrassing. Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss.
‘If you don’t think he’s worth 50M move on, if you really want him pay it. Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB.’
