Liverpool successfully hijacked Chelsea’s £60m Move for French Star Jérémy Jacquet
Liverpool have reached a comprehensive agreement to sign 20-year-old French center-back Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes. While the deal is being finalized now, he won't officially join the squad until the summer of 2026.
The Reds struck a £60m agreement to leave Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Man Utd reeling on the race.
The Transfer Breakdown
The Fee: A total package worth up to £60 million (£55m guaranteed plus £5m in performance-related add-ons).
The Contract: Jacquet is set to sign a long-term deal running until 2031.
The Medical: He is scheduled to undergo his medical today on Merseyside to wrap up the formalities before returning to Rennes on loan for the remainder of the season.
The "Hijack": Chelsea had been in pole position for weeks, but Liverpool moved quickly over the weekend to match the offer. Reports suggest Jacquet chose Anfield over Stamford Bridge due to a clearer path to first-team football, especially with Virgil van Dijk now 34 and Ibrahima Konaté’s contract situation still uncertain.
Why Jacquet?
The 6'2" defender has been a standout in Ligue 1 this season, starting 18 games for Rennes. Liverpool view him as a long-term cornerstone of their defense rather than just a quick fix for their current injury concerns (with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni sidelined).
Jacquet 188cm tall, was a standout for the France U21 national team, regarded for his physical presence and exceptional ball-playing ability, boasting a 91% pass accuracy in Ligue 1 this season.
Interestingly, this move comes after Liverpool missed out on Marc Guéhi, who recently joined Manchester City for a cut-price fee after his move to Anfield collapsed last summer.
