Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he was “very, very sad” after Liverpool decided not to offer him a new contract, despite his desire to continue his career at Anfield.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion in June 2023 and remains under contract until 2028.

The Argentina international addressed the situation during Liverpool’s pre-match media duties ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Atlético Madrid. His comments provide the clearest indication yet of how he feels about the club’s current position on his future.

Mac Allister explained that Liverpool communicated through his representatives that the club was not in a position to renew his contract. The midfielder acknowledged that the decision disappointed him, particularly because he had opportunities to consider leaving during the summer transfer window but ultimately chose to remain on Merseyside.

"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad," He said.

“Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games.

“Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”

“There wasn’t any direct conversation with me, it was my agent,” he continued.

“I don’t want to say things that they never said but what I got from my agent was that they were not in a position to renew me.

“As I said before, it’s really sad. We won a Premier League together, we went through difficult times as well together and I always did my best.

“We will see, we will see what happens, but of course it makes me a little bit sad.”

The 27-year-old also made it clear that his preference was to stay at Liverpool. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future, he did not indicate that he is actively seeking a move away from the club.

Mac Allister said: “Because this is the right club. That’s why. As I said before, I love being here and this is something special.”
