Atlético Madrid Suffer 3-0 Defeat Ahead of Liverpool Clash

Atlético Madrid’s 3-0 defeat to Athletic Club has changed the picture ahead of their Champions League clash with Liverpool

Atlético Madrid suffered a 3-0 defeat to Athletic Club at San Mamés on Saturday, leaving Diego Simeone’s side with work to do ahead of their Champions League meeting with the Reds.

The match remained goalless at half-time, but Athletic Club took control shortly after the restart. Nico Williams opened the scoring in the 46th minute before Robert Navarro doubled the advantage two minutes later. Oihan Sancet added a third late in the game to complete the victory.

Atlético struggled to respond after conceding twice in quick succession. Despite registering more shots than their opponents, they were unable to create enough clear opportunities to change the outcome.

Simeone acknowledged after the match that the result was deserved, pointing to the brief period in the second half when his team conceded the two goals that changed the game.

The defeat comes just days before Atlético travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in their opening Champions League fixture. Liverpool, meanwhile, go into the match after a 2-0 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.

The result at San Mamés gives Liverpool an indication of Atlético’s current form, although Simeone will have an opportunity to make adjustments before Wednesday’s meeting.
