Cody Gakpo forced off the pitch against Serbia due to injury

Liverpool have suffered another injury concern during the international break, with Cody Gakpo withdrawing from the Netherlands squad after sustaining an ankle injury.

The Reds forward was forced off during the first half of his country’s 2–1 UEFA Nations League victory over Serbia on Sunday after initially attempting to continue playing.

Gakpo will now return to Liverpool, where he will undergo further assessment by the club’s medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

The Dutch national team confirmed on Monday that the 27-year-old will miss their remaining fixtures during the current international period and will not be replaced in the squad.

Gakpo’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for the forward, who had made an impressive start to the campaign. He has established himself as an important attacking option for Andoni Iraola and had been enjoying a productive spell in front of goal.

Liverpool are scheduled to return to Premier League action against Manchester City at Anfield on October 11, making Gakpo’s recovery timeline a particular concern. There are fears that the injury could keep him out for several weeks, although there has yet to be any official indication of how long he could be sidelined.

The Reds will therefore await further medical examinations before determining the full extent of the setback.
