McKennie is said to have been watched by Liverpool scouts on numerous occasions during his time in the Bundesliga.
The 20-year-old midfielder can also play in a defensive role, which is more than welcomed by Klopp since the Red boss have suffered major injury setbacks on his backline in recent weeks.
The Sun has claimed Klopp is readying a £20million bid to get it done this month or could return in the summer if there is a breakdown.
Liverpool are faced with a massive injury crisis in couple of weeks now with the likes of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Lovren and Trent Alexander-Arnold being sidelined and Klopp is considering re-positioning his senior players to strengthen his side's defence or bringing in some new legs before the window closes.
