The German ace goalkeeper suffered a hand injury ahead of their weekend defeat to Bayern Leverkusen and was left out the line up for their Wednesday DFB Cup clash with Hertha Berlin.

Although Nuer travelled with his team to the capital for the Cup tie, Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac opted not risk him as he has less than two weeks to be fit for their Champions League clash with Liverpool.

A post on Bayern's Twiter account said: "For Manuel Neuer the cup match against Hertha Berlin came a bit early.

"The captain had indeed traveled to Berlin. Niko Kovac, however, did not want to take any risk and therefore refrained from using the 32-year-old."

Bayern Munich will also play both legs with the Reds without Thomas Muller, following the attacker suspension for a terrible tackle he made on Nicolas Tagliafico during their 3-3 draw with Ajax in December.
