Jurgen Klopp responds to Jose Mourinho's 'best team lost' comment and believes Liverpool 'really deserved' win

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool were well worth their victory over Tottenham as the Reds went three points clear at the top of the Premier League

The Liverpool manager insisted his champions fully deserved all three points against the Londoners after their manager Jose Mourinho was adamant the best side had lost with his team fully content to play on the counter-attack at Anfield.

"I really think we deserved the three points," Klopp said. "Of course Tottenham had chances and I know that they scored a goal with a tight offside decision.

"I don't really know [if it was onside] and they had other chances. You cannot defend Harry Kane for 90 minutes.

"With Son and Bergwijn, the speed they have is incredible but around these moments we were completely in charge of the game.

"We kept concentrated and counter-pressed well, our passing was good and of course not all our efforts lead to a goal but we had to create proper chances because they defend deep in the box with all the high balls.

"We needed to be creative and we were created.

"We forced the first goal a little bit and the second with a set-piece is really nice because we don't have a lot of time to work on things or take the time to work on the set-pieces properly and that worked out in the end."

Jurgen Klopp also praised the contribution of 19-year-old Rhys Williams at centre-back.

Williams stepped in for the injured Joel Matip after a back problem ruled him out and the teenager was impressive on his first start in the Premier League

After Heung-min Son had cancelled out Mohamed Salah's opener, it was left to Roberto Firmino to head home in stoppage time to extend an unbeaten run at Anfield to 66 games.

Klopp said: "Rhys couldn't defend alone but he was a really big part of it and did a really good job.

"So it's really nice for him. It was obviously a late decision [to pick him] because with Joel, we didn't know exactly what would happen and stuff like this but Rhys did really well and that for us is massively important."

On whether he sees his side as sure retaining the title Klopp added: "That is a little early [to talk about the title] but a tough period, a really tough period coming up, but one we've already gone through and playing a game like this tonight is absolutely exceptional.

"Tough game, deserved three points against a top side. Organisation-wise, they are so difficult to play against with the counter-attacking threat they have. So I liked the game a lot."
