It has been claimed that Benfica attempted to sign Liverpool defender Nat Phillips during transfer deadline.

Nathaniel Phillips.

Nathaniel Phillips returned from a loan at Bournemouth following the closing of last season Championship campaign after the Liverpool defender helped the Cherries gain promotion to the top-flight.

The Liverpool defender was also tipped to make a return to the club on permanent basis this summer but continued under Jurgen Klopp.

Now, James Pearce of the Athletic has disclosed that Benfica who's acquired a huge sum from the sale of Darwin Nunez - offered the 25-year-old the chance to move  to the Portuguese top-flight. Pearce stated that the Premira Liga club's offer came after an injury  to Ibrahima Konate which is not a good one for Jurgen Klopp.

"The Athletic can reveal that the day before the deadline, Benfica tried to sign Phillips on a season-long loan. The Portuguese giants urgently needed defensive reinforcements and their German manager Roger Schmidt had admired Phillips since his loan stint at Stuttgart in 2019-20," Pearce wrote.
