Now, according to reports the French forward was medically examined by Chelsea earlier this month and is expected to seal a transfer £52.58 million next summer.
Chelsea's American owners are trying to lure Nkunku to the Bridge, with a pre-trial seen as a way of showing their keenness, albeit oddly.
Leipzig have sold midfielder Naby keita to Liverpool in a similar fashion to Chelsea's attempt to sign Nkunku. Keita agreed to the £58m deal but spent the rest of the season at Leipzig before moving to Anfield in 2018.
Nkunku, 24, is sought after by most of Europe's top clubs, with Paris Saint-Germain also associated with the prolific Bundesliga player.
Nkunku scored 35 goals in 52 appearances for Leipzig last season and has already scored six this season.
