Alisson Becker has urged Reds to raise their performance level after Fulham
Alisson Becker has called on Liverpool to improve their mentality and overall performance after the Reds were held to a goalless draw by Fulham at Anfield.
Liverpool entered the fixture looking to build on their Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid in midweek, but they struggled to produce the same intensity against a well-organised Fulham side.
The 0-0 draw extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League season, but it also represented another dropped opportunity at home. Andoni Iraola’s side have now drawn three of their opening four league matches, with their only victory coming against Ipswich Town.
Alisson was one of the more experienced voices to address the Reds' performance after the match. The Brazilian goalkeeper acknowledged that the team did not perform at the required level and stressed the need for a stronger mentality.
"It was a poor performance, in some moments even from myself, but from the team.
"Collectively, we didn’t play well. Many things we tried to do, we couldn’t do it well. We couldn’t press them well. In the first half we spent too much energy trying to press them in a good way, but we couldn’t.
"Obviously, it’s a big challenge to play Wednesday night and Saturday evening, and you have another game Tuesday. But we need to get the right mentality to do that and I think it wasn’t the case today. We have to improve for the next one.
"We are not happy at all with a draw, that’s not something that should happen with Liverpool. Unbeaten with three draws is not something to celebrate too much with this shirt – we celebrate being unbeaten if we win the games.
"We take the clean sheet for today but we are not happy at all. We wanted the three points. We need to aim for big things. But we are going to keep fighting, keep preparing, keep training hard and try to perform as best as we can, and try to win."
His comments reflected the frustration within the squad, particularly after the Reds had played a demanding Champions League fixture only a few days earlier. Iraola also admitted that his players lacked freshness following the short turnaround.
The goalkeeper was also involved in one of Fulham’s clearest opportunities during the first half after an error at the back. Liverpool avoided conceding from the mistake, while Alisson subsequently made important saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Liverpool ultimately finished the game without conceding, but they were unable to find a breakthrough at the other end. Victor Muñoz came closest to scoring when his header struck the crossbar, while Fulham defended effectively to secure a valuable point.
