Bournemouth vs Liverpool: Match Preview
Liverpool travel to the Vitality Stadium on Sunday looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League, while Andoni Iraola prepares for an emotional first return to Bournemouth since leaving the Cherries to take charge at Anfield.
The 2pm BST kick-off comes with Liverpool unbeaten in their opening four league matches, although three draws have left them with six points. Their most recent league outing ended goalless against Fulham at Anfield, before a much-changed side produced a 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham in midweek.
Iraola returns to familiar territory
The storyline around the fixture is impossible to ignore. Iraola spent three seasons at Bournemouth and established an energetic, aggressive style during his time on the south coast. He now returns as Liverpool's head coach, facing the club he left at the end of last season.
His Liverpool side have shown signs of the high-intensity football associated with his Bournemouth teams, but the early weeks of the season have also highlighted the work still required to find the right balance. Liverpool have scored in three of their four league matches but were frustrated by Fulham last weekend.
Sunday therefore represents another opportunity for Iraola's team to turn their unbeaten start into more victories.
Bournemouth's European boost
Bournemouth enter the game with confidence from their first European victory. Marco Rose's side travelled to Spain on Thursday and defeated Real Sociedad 2-1 in the Europa League, their first European fixture in the club's history.
Their Premier League start, however, has been more difficult. Bournemouth are still waiting for their first league victory after taking three points from their opening four matches, with draws against Everton and Newcastle following defeats to Manchester City. They also drew 2-2 with Brentford last weekend.
The major question for Rose will be whether Bournemouth can reproduce their aggressive approach after travelling to Spain only 48 hours before facing Liverpool.

Liverpool have no new injury concerns ahead of the trip. However, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Federico Chiesa remain unavailable. Iraola confirmed that the rest of the squad came through the week without fresh fitness problems.
The available options give Iraola some important decisions to make, particularly in midfield and across the attacking positions. Liverpool's midweek victory over Tottenham also provided valuable minutes for several younger players, although the Premier League fixture is likely to require a more experienced starting XI.
Joe Gomez is also approaching a notable milestone: his next appearance will be the 300th of his club career.
A fixture Liverpool have traditionally enjoyed
The historical numbers favour Liverpool in this fixture. The Reds have completed a league double over Bournemouth in six of the last nine seasons in which the clubs have met. Liverpool have also failed to score in only one of their previous 18 Premier League meetings with the Cherries, scoring 54 goals across those matches, an average of three per game.
However, recent history also provides a reminder that the Vitality Stadium can be an awkward destination. Liverpool's most recent league visit ended in a 3-2 defeat in January 2026, while the corresponding fixture at Anfield earlier in the season finished 4-2 to Liverpool.
What could decide the match?
Liverpool's attacking efficiency will be crucial. After being held scoreless by Fulham, the Reds need their attacking players to turn possession and opportunities into goals.
Bournemouth's intensity could also cause problems. Their aggressive pressing and willingness to play forward quickly have been central characteristics of their football, and Liverpool will need to handle the pressure when building from the back.
The physical factor is another intriguing element. Bournemouth played a demanding Europa League match in Spain on Thursday, while Liverpool's last fixture was a home Carabao Cup game on Tuesday. The difference in recovery time could become significant, particularly late in the match.
