Max Eberl has explained why Bayern did not pursue a move for Barcola
Bayern Munich’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, has confirmed that the Bundesliga champions considered making a move for Liverpool winger Bradley Barcola before ultimately deciding to sign Luis Díaz.
Speaking about Bayern’s transfer strategy, Eberl revealed that Barcola was among the attacking options the club assessed. The French winger was already known to Eberl from his time at RB Leipzig, where he had previously monitored the player, and Bayern also explored the possibility of bringing him to Munich.
However, the financial demands involved in a potential deal made the move difficult for Bayern.
“Of course, we also looked at Bradley at Bayern. But when you hear those kinds of sums, it was too much for us,” Eberl said.
Barcola eventually joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €125 million, with the overall value of the deal potentially increasing through add-ons. Bayern therefore decided against matching the required fee.
Instead, the German club decided to stick with Luis Díaz whom they signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2025. Díaz's transfer from Anfield was reported at around €70 million, making it a considerably different financial commitment to the proposed cost of Barcola.
Eberl stressed that Díaz was also a significant investment, but explained that he viewed the financial scale of the two deals differently.
“With Luis Díaz, we made a decision that was also costly, but on a different scale than Bradley,” Eberl added.
