Bradley Barcola made his Liverpool debut during Friday's 2-0 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town
Barcola made his first appearance for the Reds on Friday evening, coming off the bench during the 2-0 Premier League win over the Tractor Boys at Portman Road.
The French forward was introduced in the 64th minute, replacing fellow summer signing Victor Muñoz. He operated from the left side after entering the match, with Cody Gakpo moving across to the right.
It was a relatively short introduction, with the Reds already holding a two-goal advantage through Alexander Isak's early double. As a result, Barcola was not required to have a decisive influence on the outcome, but the appearance marked the beginning of his Liverpool career.
Iraola takes measured view of debut
Andoni Iraola was satisfied with Barcola's contribution but also acknowledged that the player will need time to adapt.
Speaking after the match, the Liverpool manager highlighted Barcola's passing and his movement when Liverpool had opportunities to counter-attack. Iraola also noted that there were occasions when Liverpool failed to find him in behind the Ipswich defence.
The manager also pointed out that Barcola had not played competitive football since the World Cup, explaining why Liverpool needed to manage his introduction carefully.
"I think he had good minutes,” Iraola told Sky Sports.
“I think he has a very good pass.
"In a counter, a couple of times we didn't find him, so we will have to learn these kinds of movements because he will be in behind, threatening all the time.
"He hasn't played any competitive minutes since the World Cup, so we have to be a little bit more careful, but I think he has been very good."
Competition for places
Barcola's arrival also adds to the competition within Liverpool's attacking group.
Gakpo has made a productive start to the league campaign, while Muñoz has also featured during the opening matches. There are further options available to Iraola, meaning Barcola will have to compete for his position rather than being guaranteed a starting place.
For Iraola, this provides another selection decision as he continues to assess his preferred combinations.
The next stage for Barcola
Liverpool's next Premier League fixture is against Fulham at Anfield on September 12, while the club also have Champions League football ahead.
For Barcola, the immediate objective will simply be to build his match fitness, understand his new teammates and gradually establish his place within Iraola's plans. His first appearance will be viewed as an introduction rather than a definitive assessment of what he will contribute at the club.
He has now had his first competitive minutes with Liverpool and has experienced playing within Iraola's system. The coming fixtures will provide a clearer indication of how quickly he settles into the team and how the manager intends to use him.
