Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo Left Out of Liverpool's Champions League Squad
Liverpool have named their 25-man squad for the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, with Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo among the notable omissions.
Chiesa’s omission continues a difficult period in terms of his involvement at Anfield. The Italian winger was also initially left out of last season’s Champions League squad before being added later following Giovanni Leoni’s long-term injury. He is currently recovering from an injury and is expected to return to training during the September international break.
Endo has also not been included in Iraola’s European squad. The Japan international has been an unused substitute in Liverpool’s opening league matches of the season and has yet to make an appearance under the new head coach.
Their exclusions are partly linked to the limited number of places available on UEFA’s List A. Liverpool have included defenders Jérémy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, who are not exempt from registration under the Champions League’s youth rules because they have not spent the required period at the club. Other players, including some younger members of the squad, can use List B provisions.
The Reds have also chosen to include players currently recovering from injuries, including Leoni, Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitiké. That suggests they have taken a longer-term view of the competition when deciding how to use its available squad places.
For Chiesa and Endo, the immediate consequence is straightforward: their European involvement will have to wait, while they remain eligible for domestic competitions.
Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign at home to Atlético Madrid on September 9.
