Dominik Szoboszlai has spoken about his preferred and least-preferred positions in an interview with Steven Gerrard
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has discussed his role under new head coach Andoni Iraola, making it clear that he remains prepared to adapt when required while preferring to operate in midfield.
Speaking during an interview with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Szoboszlai addressed the possibility of playing at right-back, a position he has covered on several occasions because of Liverpool's defensive situation. He said he appreciated Iraola making it clear that using him there was not intended to become a regular solution.
“I think he made it clear once in a press conference that I’m not going to play right-back, which meant a lot to me,” Szoboszlai said. “But if he needs me there I’m obviously going to be available.”
The comments underline Szoboszlai's willingness to put the team's needs ahead of his own positional preference. While he has demonstrated that he can perform effectively at right-back, his primary role remains in midfield, where his energy, passing ability and work rate are important to the team’s approach.
The Hungarian's versatility has become particularly useful during periods when Liverpool have been short of options in defence. However, Iraola's stance suggests that Szoboszlai is expected to remain primarily a midfield player rather than being converted into a permanent right-back.
When asked about the position he least enjoys playing, Szoboszlai identified the right-wing role, explaining that "No. 7" is the position he likes least.
On his preferred role, he identified the No. 8 position, particularly the box-to-box midfield role. That is also the position he is currently being used in under Iraola.
He said: “8 or 10 , like a box-to-box 8.
“Get the balls from the defender, give the long passes, but also arrive in the box, shots from a little bit further. That’s what I really like.”
