Pierre Sage has made his position clear on a potential January transfer for Ismaïla Sarr to Liverpool
Liverpool showed strong interest in Crystal Palace forward Ismaïla Sarr during the final stages of the summer transfer window. The Reds launched late bids exceeding £50 million for the 28-year-old Senegal international, which Palace ultimately knocked back before the transfer window slammed shut.
The failed move has reportedly left Sarr needing time to process the disappointment, with Sage admitting that the opportunity to join a club of Liverpool's stature was a major one for the player.
Sage: Sarr Needs Time to Recover
Speaking about Sarr's situation, Sage acknowledged that the winger will need time following the collapse of the move.
The Crystal Palace boss said: "He has to digest for sure because it's a dream for a lot of players to play with this kind of club."
Sage added that Sarr had a good opportunity, but it ultimately did not work out, and stressed that the forward must now focus on having another strong season with Palace.
Will Liverpool Return for Sarr in January?
With Liverpool having failed to complete a deal during the summer window, attention has naturally turned towards a possible January approach.
However, Sage has poured cold water on the possibility of Sarr leaving Selhurst Park midway through the season.
When asked whether the 28-year-old could still join Liverpool in January, the Palace boss said:
"I don't think [he will leave]. I don't think so, because all the clubs are in their season."
Sage also pointed to Palace's involvement in European competition and the difficulty of reshaping a squad in the middle of a campaign.
"We have a decision to take about the European list. It's difficult to move the team when you are in this competition."
"Sarr Must Recover From Liverpool Disappointment"
Sage acknowledged the emotional impact of the failed move on the Senegal international.
Liverpool represented a major opportunity for Sarr, and the Palace boss admitted that playing for a club of Liverpool's stature is a dream for many players.
He told BBC Sports: “Like every bad situation, time does the job and we need time for that. He needs time too.
“First of all, he needs to recover because he was and is injured."
Sage continued: "He has to digest for sure because it’s a dream for a lot of players to play with this kind of club [Liverpool].
“He had a good opportunity but in the end it didn’t work.
“If he wants to continue, you have to have a good season with us as he did last year.
“We know he needs time.”
Sage stressed that Sarr will now need time to move beyond the disappointment and focus on producing another strong season for the Eagles. The Palace boss believes the 28-year-old can once again attract interest from top clubs if he continues performing at a high level.

For now, Sarr remains a Crystal Palace player, and Sage wants him focused on helping the club throughout the season.
