Atlético Madrid winger Arnau Ortiz will miss Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Liverpool at Anfield after serving a UEFA suspension

Liverpool will welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield on Wednesday, with Iraola preparing for his first Champions League match as the Reds' head coach. They go into the fixture after securing their first Premier League victory with a 2-0 win away to Ipswich Town, while the Rojiblancos arrive following a 3-0 defeat to Athletic Club in their most recent La Liga outing.

Atlético Madrid will be without winger Arnau Ortiz when they travel to Anfield. The 24-year-old remains suspended following a red card he received during his time with Śląsk Wrocław in a 2024 UEFA Conference League qualifying match. The dismissal came after he received two yellow cards in extra time.

Because Śląsk Wrocław were eliminated from the competition, Ortiz did not have the opportunity to serve the outstanding suspension in a subsequent European fixture. The sanction therefore remained on his UEFA disciplinary record and has carried over to his current club, Atlético Madrid. UEFA's current Champions League information lists Ortiz as suspended for the opening league-phase fixture against the Reds.

The exclusion comes at an interesting point in the player’s development. The 24-year-old was promoted into Atlético's senior squad this summer after a productive spell with the club's reserve team, where he reportedly contributed 23 goals and six assists. He has subsequently made three La Liga appearances this season, although his involvement has reduced in the club's most recent matches.

Atlético are also dealing with an injury concern over striker Alexander Sørloth, who is reportedly expected to miss the trip to Anfield.
