Joe Gomez is closing in on a return to team training after missing the opening weeks of Liverpool’s season with a muscle injury sustained during pre-season
Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign this month, while Premier League fixtures continue to come in quick succession. The Reds will host Atletico Madrid at Anfield on September 9 before their league meeting with Fulham on September 12. The timing of Gomez’s return to training will be particularly relevant to these fixtures.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola provided the latest update on Gomez ahead of the Reds’ Premier League trip to Ipswich Town, confirming that the full-back was expected to resume training with the first-team squad the following week. Iraola also confirmed that the defender’s recovery had progressed normally, suggesting there had been no significant setback in his rehabilitation.
Gomez has yet to feature for Liverpool this season and his absence has left the Reds with fewer options in defence, although they have continued to manage the situation with the players available to them.
Another boost for the Andoni Iraola's defence is that Giovanni Leoni is also making progress in his recovery from a long-term injury. However, the young defender is expected to follow a different timeline, with his return to team training targeted for later in September. As a result, Gomez’s return is currently the more immediate boost for the squad.
