Richard Hughes has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal as the club’s new sporting director, just days after leaving the same position at Liverpool.

Al-Hilal confirmed Hughes’ appointment on Sunday, September 6, following Liverpool’s announcement two days earlier that the 47-year-old had stepped down from his role as sporting director. His move to Saudi Arabia had been expected since his departure from Anfield was announced, but Al-Hilal have now formally confirmed the appointment.

Hughes joined Liverpool in June 2024 after leaving Bournemouth, succeeding Jorg Schmadtke as the club’s sporting director. He arrived as part of the structural changes that followed Jürgen Klopp’s departure and worked closely with then incoming head coach Arne Slot.

One of the most significant decisions of Hughes’ time at Liverpool was the appointment of Slot as Klopp’s successor. The Dutchman went on to lead Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, giving Hughes an early success during his time at the club.

Hughes also played a central role in the Reds' recruitment during his two years at Anfield. His tenure included several major investments in the squad, with Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike among the high-profile additions made during his time as sporting director. Liverpool also completed the signing of Bradley Barcola during the latest summer transfer window.

Hughes departure came shortly after the close of the summer transfer window. Liverpool confirmed that Hughes had informed the club that he wanted to pursue a fresh challenge and had agreed to remain in the role until the transfer window had closed to allow the club to complete its summer business before his exit.

At Al-Hilal, Hughes will now take responsibility for the club’s sporting operations, including recruitment and the wider development of its football structure. His appointment adds another experienced European football executive to the Saudi club's organisation as it continues to strengthen its squad and sporting department.

Hughes’ move also means Liverpool must now find another sporting director and the Merseyside club has begun just that — with reports indicating that both internal and external candidates are being considered.
