Jeremie Frimpong was seen remonstrating with Hugo Ekitike just before the Liverpool striker was sent off against Southampton at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Frenchman came on for Alexander Isak at half-time, with the Swede having scored his first Reds goal shortly before the interval, and he netted a late winner for Arne Slot’s side after they were pegged back by a Shea Charles equaliser.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old’s decisive strike was promptly followed by a second yellow card as he took off his shirt in the celebration, with his dismissal triggering a suspension for the Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Frimpong knew Ekitike had a red card coming…

When Ekitike proudly held his jersey aloft after scoring in the 85th minute, Frimpong sprinted towards his teammate, but it wasn’t to join in the celebrations.

Instead, the Dutchman wore a look of horror on his face as he realised that the striker was already on a booking and was about to be sent off by Tom Bramall, and his annoyance at Liverpool’s number 22 over the needless second yellow was evident.

Frimpong’s frustration was understandable

The French forward’s dismisall tonight falls into the ‘silly and preventable category’, having been booked firstly for dissent after reacting angrily to having a foul being harshly awarded against him, and then for removing his shirt in celebrating his late winner.

While technically both were yellow card offences, it boggles the mind that he could be sent off for something so innocuous when players can stay on the pitch despite making genuinely dangerous tackles (cough, James Tarkowski on Alexis Mac Allister, cough).

Nonetheless, Frimpong was far from pleased with Ekitike for getting himself dismissed in the closing minutes of the win over Southampton, and the ensuing suspension for the Palace game isn’t what Liverpool needed with Isak still building up his match fitness.

Amid a pleasing result for the Reds, the irritation over the needless red card has diluted some of the satisfaction of a seventh successive win in all competitions.

The 22-year-old was the subject of a scathing article from German publication Bild after his country’s shock 2-0 defeat to Slovakia last week, being derided as ‘faltering’ and ‘almost invisible’, so he’d have felt that he had a point to prove in his next match…and prove it he did!

Wirtz scores sensational free kick in cathartic Germany win

Needing a win over Northern Ireland to kickstart their World Cup qualifying campaign, Julian Nagelsmann’s side held a narrow 2-1 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining when they won a free kick 25 yards from goal.

Up stepped Wirtz to guide the ball over the defensive wall and into the visitors’ net beyond the despairing dive of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, putting the seal on a cathartic 3-1 victory.

As he turned to celebrate, the Liverpool playmaker put his finger to his ear in what appeared to be a pointed gesture towards those in his homeland who were castigating him after the loss in Bratislava three days previously.

The perfect response from Wirtz to his critics

Although some of the recent criticism of Wirtz has been way over the top, he’ll no doubt have been delighted to produce a moment of such magic at a crucial juncture for his national team, who were in danger of taking just one point from a possible six to begin their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Aside from his show-stopping free kick, the 22-year-old made some important contributions throughout Germany’s win in Cologne. As per Sofascore, he completed 33 of his 38 passes (87% success) and two dribbles, won seven duels and executed three key passes.

He’ll now have almost a full week to prepare for Liverpool’s visit to Burnley next Sunday, which begins a hectic sequence of seven matches in 21 days as the Reds’ season shifts up a few gears.

After seeing Dominik Szoboszlai net a stunning free kick in the win over Arsenal last weekend, on Sunday night it was Wirtz’s turn to grab the headlines with a majestic set piece. In both cases, it came at the perfect time for their respective teams.

All else being equal, Mbappe’s strike would’ve still ensured victory for Les Bleus, but the mentality shift which could’ve emerged from a Ukraine equaliser was prevented thanks to Konate’s last-gasp clearance.

The 26-year-old looked shaky in his first couple of games this season, eliciting strong criticism from several pundits, but he was back to his usual self against Arsenal last weekend and came up clutch for his country last night in their moment of need.

The Reds’ number 5 enjoyed a strong performance overall against Ukraine, completing 48 of his 51 passes (91% success), winning four of his six duels, contributing seven defensive actions and executing three accurate long balls, while he lost possession just five times from 64 touches (Sofascore).

Konate’s place in the Liverpool starting XI had appeared to come under question barely over a week ago after some unconvincing displays and the ultimately doomed pursuit of Marc Guehi, but in the past few days he’s delivered the perfect response to his critics.

His long-term future at Anfield remains shrouded in doubt as uncertainty lingers as to whether or not he’ll sign a new contract. Let’s hope that situation isn’t allowed to rumble on like the three major contractual sagas which formed an unwanted undercurrent to last season.
